The company

Elianto is an EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) company for small and medium-sized concentrating solar power plants (also CSP for Concentrating Solar Power) based on the Fresnel mirror system.
Founded in 2007, Elianto was created as a spin-off of the CRS4, a research center located in Sardinia, whose team of researchers — including Piero Pili, founder of Elianto s.r.l. — is led by Prof. Carlo Rubbia (Nobel Prize in Physics 1984). In 2014 the company completed the construction of the first industrial plant and estimates to complete the solar field of a second plant, now fully built,

by the end of 2022.

Technology

The technology behind the system with which Elianto presents itself on the market is the concentrated solar panel system. A system capable of concentrating the sun's rays towards a receiver, usually positioned more than 100 meters high, through a system of reflective mirrors (also called Fresnel mirrors). The thermal energy released by the concentration of solar rays is used to heat a liquid (diathermic oil and salts) to create steam that will transfer heat both to the thermal energy storage unit and to the energy generation unit, generating electricity (or thermal energy if necessary). The first medium-sized concentrated solar power plant was inaugurated in 2007 in Seville. And it is precisely in Spain that this system is spreading more and more. The main advantages of this technology, and therefore of Elianto's solution, are lower production costs and higher yields.

Traction and validation roadmap

More than 15 years of experience in the development of solar plants for the generation of heat at medium and high temperatures, with constant support from research and development activities aimed at improving plant performance and reducing investment costs to make the product competitive compared to competing technologies, primarily those based on fossil fuels.

Industrial references: an industrial-scale 5 MW plant in 2013 based on LFR technology. A complete product revision for Microscale in the European H2020 Innova Micro Solar project. A complete product revision for medium and large-scale production carried out at ENEA in Rome. An industrial-scale plant (9 MW and 17,300 m2 of mirrors) nearing completion in Sicily. A hybrid solar thermal - solar PV plant with battery for the creation of two thermal and electrical microgrids for energy communities in urban areas currently under construction in Sardinia.
